We took a quick trip to Death Valley this week to check on the wildflowers. This winter, the area got significant rain for the first time since 2005, so we were hoping for some nice color. We noted some small patches of purple and white along the way, but there was mostly large areas of Desert Gold stretching across the valley floor up to the base of the mountains. It was quite nice.
I hve heard that airline pilots are telling passengers to look out and enjoy the mega-bloom in Death Valley. If you can see the bloom from 20000 – 40000 feet – that really tells me it is a carpet of flowers. Makes me want to fly out to see it for myself!

I am still amazed by how large and beefy the stalks of the Desert Gold flowers are; I really like the angle of this photo and how it shows the large plant and sea of flowers in the background.

I like the contrast of the bright flowers with the dull-looking hills.

I agree. The flowers look so out of place against the barren landscape. It makes for interesting contrast.
