This is a hippo that we came across in a small pond in the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. It seemed a lot calmer than other wild hippos that we had seen, but we maintained a healthy distance and kept an eye out for others when we were close to the edge of the water. They are surprisingly aggressive and impressively large in person.
Some interesting clouds over central California. Atmospheric science is really fascinating, and it’s neat to see how clouds give a visual representation of atmospheric flow.
It’s impressive how many waterfowl there are in the arctic in the summer months. After growing up in middle latitudes and seeing waterfowl midrate north every summer, I guess it shouldn’t have been a surprise, but I really didn’t expect the quantity of birds in the northern altitudes.
