Sunday Nature Stills – 7/07/2013

These are Mexican Free-Tailed Bats that I photographed Saturday night in Texas.  They are about the size of a field mouse, but they fly surprisingly fast.  They were really tricky to focus on in the dark. I almost never shoot photos with artificial external lighting, but for these light bats, I used an old off-camera strobe to momentarily light them up.  They are really amazing little creatures.  I’m surprised that they fly as well as they do.

Sunday Nature Stills – 6/09/2013

Just one photo this evening.

This is a young female elephant seal that I photographed in a small rocky cove along the coast of California.  There were several other female seals napping on the small pebble beach of the cove and one large male seal was keeping a watchful eye on them.  This one seal was very playful and seemed to be swimming just for fun.  Yvonne and I quietly watched it for quite a while.  It was definitely just playing and having fun.  When I took this photo, it was swimming in circles chasing its tail.
