Sunday Nature Stills – 10/06/2013

Just one photo tonight.

I took this image on the north-west side of Heron Island in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.  This was at a depth of only about 15 ft in very clear water.  This is on the outer ocean side of a coral-cay (basically an atoll), so the seafloor drops off quickly to deep open ocean water on the left.  On the right side of the image, the water progressively gets shallower up to the water surface at the edge of the cay.  This shallow thriving ecosystem is a thin stripe around the periphery of the cay that is only about 100-200 feet wide. At times there was a light current as the ocean water is divided and flows around the outer edge of the cay. The water was a little cool at 68F.

Sunday Nature Stills – 8/11/2013

Just one photo tonight.

This is a Rockfish (Scorpaena I think) that I photographed in Monterey Bay.  I really like that it is so well camouflaged with the surrounding aquatic plants.  It was on a pile of large rocks in about 10 foot deep water.  It was hidden on the surface of a rock only a few feet below the surface.
