It was really calming to just sit and watch these zebra graze.   It’s nice to watch healthy animals going about their lives in their native habitat.

We went on a walk late one afternoon along the shore of a beautiful little lake in eastern Alaska near the Canada border.  On our walk, we noticed a tree had been freshly chewed by a beaver.  After dinner, we went on the same walk, and the tree had been cut through in just an hour or so.  The next morning, we went back to the same spot, and the tree was completely missing with only scuff marks in the leaf litter leading down to the lake.  It was neat to see the progress of the little beaver doing its thing.

While visiting the Pacific coast, it’s always fun to spend time looking in all the little tidepools and crevasses in the rocks.  The seashore is always so full of life.  This little Striped Shore Crab isn’t much bigger than the diameter of a quarter.  It was comfortably hiding in a rock crack, but it would slowly come out and curiously pinch at my finger tip if I slowly presented it.

I photographed these fungi in different places around North America.  I like how delicate they are and how many small variations there are between the different types.

I was happy to see this male Western Tanager as it was migrating through the Northern California mountains.

I took this photograph off the coast of the Monterey peninsula. Three humpback whales just surfaced and are sinking back into the water after lunge feeding. In this case, the whales would come up as a group directly under a school of sardines. Each of the whales would take a large gulp of sardine filled water at the surface and then slowly squeeze the water through their baleen as they sank back into the water. At the time, there were also a lot of sea lions feeding in the area.  When the whales where about the come up, the sea lions would scatter in all directions to avoid the surfacing whales.
